Coroner: Driver killed in head-on crash

ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) One of two people injured in a crash on Friday in the northern part of Allen County has passed away.

Emergency responders were called around 9:30 a.m. to the 7900 block of Hosler Road. When they arrived they found vans belonging to companies Frontier Communications and Klopfenstein Furniture had crashed into one another.

Investigators said both drivers extricated from their vehicles and were taken to a hospital.

On Monday, the Allen County Coroner’s Office said Durand R. Courtney, 52, of Avilla died just before noon on Friday. Courtney was the driver of the Frontier Communications van.

The coroner said Courtney’s dead was caused by blunt force trauma from the crash and ruled his death an accident.

Courtney’s death is the 12 traffic fatality in Allen County in 2016. The crash remains under investigation by the Allen County Sheriff’s Department.
