FORT WAYNE, Ind. — Senior Brandon Soat collected five hits, redshirt-senior Shane Trevino and redshirt-sophomore Shannon Baker each had three hits, while redshirt-sophomore Brock Logan posted five RBIs, to lead IPFW to a split of a Summit League baseball doubleheader against league-leading Oral Roberts University Saturday afternoon at Mastodon Field in Fort Wayne. The host Mastodons (19-20, 5-12 Summit League) won the nightcap, 4-2, after falling in the opener, 10-4, against the visiting Golden Eagles (24-13, 13-4 Summit League). IPFW and ORU will play the series finale on Sunday, April 24, at 12 p.m. at Mastodon Field in Fort Wayne.
In game two, IPFW scored three runs in the first inning and one run in the third inning, while getting six-plus strong innings on the mound from senior Trevor Storie. In the first, redshirt-senior Greg Kaiser (0-3) drew a two-out walk and stole second base, before scoring on an RBI single by Trevino (3-4, 2 RBIs). Senior Kendall Whitman (1-3) followed with a single, as well, before Logan (1-4, 2 RBIs) promptly laced a two-run double to the wall in right center field to plate both Trevino and Whitman for a 3-2 advantage.
In the third, Trevino blasted a two-out, solo home run to right field for his ninth homer this season, which is tied for the team lead with Kaiser. Baker (2-3) added two hits in the contest, as did Soat (2-4).
Storie (4-5) started for IPFW and pitched 6.1 innings for the mound win, scattering five hits and two runs, both earned, with three strikeouts and three walks. He allowed a two-run home run in the first inning, before settling down and pitching into the seventh inning. Junior Jordan Martin tossed 1.2 scoreless innings of relief for the Mastodons, allowing no hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Redshirt-junior Jake Weber (7) pitched the final 1.0 shutout inning for his team-leading seventh save this season, yielding no hits with one strikeout and no walks.
ORU was led offensively in the nightcap by Matt Whatley (1-4, 2 RBIs), who hit the two-run homer, while Nick Wood (4-2) started for the Golden Eagles and pitched the first 3.0 innings in defeat, allowing five hits and four runs, all earned, with two strikeouts and one walk.
In game one, IPFW scored three runs in the first inning and one run in the second, taking an early 4-2 advantage. ORU, however, used a seven-run fourth inning and added a run in the sixth for the win.
In the first, Soat (3-5, RBI) and senior Evan VanSumeren (2-5) each singled to open the at bat, and Kaiser (1-5) reached on a fielding error at shortstop to load the bases with no outs. Following a pair of strikeouts, Logan (1-4, 3 RBIs) provided a clutch two-out, three-run double to right center field to plate Soat, VanSumeren and Kaiser.
In the second, Baker (1-4) singled to lead-off, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior Jackson Boyce (0-2) and on to third when the base was left uncovered on Boyce’s sacrifice. Baker crossed the plate courtesy of a run-scoring single from Soat.
Sophomore Evan Miller (4-4) started for IPFW and pitched the first 4.0 innings in defeat, allowing six hits and nine runs, seven earned, with four strikeouts and four walks. Sophomore Damian Helm tossed 2.0 innings of relief, scattering two hits and one run, earned, with one strikeout and two walks. Redshirt-sophomore Brandon Phelps pitched the final 3.0 scoreless innings for the Mastodons, yielding no hits with two strikeouts and one walk.
ORU was led offensively in the opener by Nick Rotola (2-5, RBI) with two hits, while Nick Roark (1-4, 2 RBIs) and Noah Cummings (1-2, 2 RBIs) each had two RBIs. Bryce Howe (3-2) started for the Golden Eagles and pitched the first 7.0 innings for the mound win, scattering nine hits and four runs, one earned, with four strikeouts and one walk.
