Three Mastodons earn MIVA honors

FORY WAYNE, Ind. – Three members of the IPFW men’s volleyball team have been named to All-MIVA teams, the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association recently announced. Luis Bertran and Andrew Sellan were First Team selections, while Alex Harthaller was named Honorable Mention despite missing half the season due to injury.

Bertran broke the IPFW career digs record on February 20 against then-No. 8 Loyola. Bertran currently has 961 career digs, 145 more than former record holder, All-American Jay Golsteyn. The MIVA Defensive Player of the Week (Feb. 2), Bertran has earned at least 10 digs in 16 matches during the regular season, including a season-high 18 at McKendree on February 6. Bertran is ninth nationally in digs per set (2.60), while leading the MIVA, while being the NCAA active career leader in Division I digs and digs per set.

Sellan leads the Mastodons and the MIVA with 423 kills on the season, while becoming the seventh Mastodon to earn 1,000 career kills in the rally-scoring era. Sellan currently sits 11th in IPFW career kills, earning a career-high 29 kills at Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras on March 10. Sellan earned a double-double (27 kills, 10 digs) at McKendree on February 6 for his seventh career double-double. Sellan has earned at least 20 kills in six matches during the regular season. Sellan is fourth nationally in kills per set (4.41) and fifth in points per set (5.06), while leading the MIVA in both categories. Sellan is second in Division I active career leaders in kills and attempts, while sitting fifth in active career aces (104).

In just 14 matches this season, Harthaller has earned 114 kills and 27 total blocks. Harthaller currently sits second in aces per set (0.41), which would place him 13th nationally if he were eligible for the national rankings. Harthaller reached his third career double-double (13 kills, 10 digs) at Quincy on April 2 and has earned at least 10 kills in five matches this season. Harthaller earned a season-high 19 kills and five aces in the Mastodons’ near upset at No. 12 Loyola on April 8.

IPFW opens the MIVA Tournament at top-seeded Ohio State on Sunday, April 17. The Buckeyes, ranked second nationally, and Mastodons are set for a 7 p.m., start in St. John Arena.
