Purdue hires Chicago-based firm for athletic director search

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Purdue University has hired a Chicago-based firm to help the school look for its next athletic director, according to school officials.

Representatives from DHR International attended the Purdue search committee’s first meeting last Wednesday in Indianapolis, trustees chairman Michael Berghoff told the (Lafayette) Journal and Courier. The entire search committee, which consists of Purdue faculty, athletics administrators and current and former athletes, either attended the meeting or participated by phone.

“Once the team was compiled, we started thinking about the pluses and minuses of having a search firm,” Berghoff said. “They have some experience we don’t have. The university has a lot of experience hiring deans, provosts, faculty members, administrative staff. Admittedly, the AD (athletic director) search is a little different, and we haven’t done one in 20 years.”

Purdue athletic director Morgan Burke announced in February that he would retire in July 2017 after serving in his position nearly 26 years.

DHR International will seek feedback over the next month from Purdue stakeholders regarding the skill set and criteria they feel are important in the next athletic director, Berghoff. The firm will then develop a job description and compile a list of candidates, he said.

Berghoff hopes to ultimately give Purdue University President Mitch Daniels two or three strong candidates to consider.

“We’re eager to get started, but I think the timing depends so much on the candidates that it’s difficult to predict,” Berghoff said. “We’re in a great spot in that we have a real talent in the position now who’s willing to continue on until we hire somebody.”

It’s unclear how long the search will take, but Berghoff said it will likely take three to six months, based on the timetable for searches conducted by other universities.

DHR International has participated in athletic director searches for Colorado State, Miami, Pitt, Rice and Syracuse, according to the firm’s website.
