DEKALB COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) – Three people were critically hurt after a head-on crash in DeKalb County Wednesday evening.

According to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department, the crash happened on U.S. 6 between Butler and Waterloo near the Waterloo Airport around 8 p.m.

Investigators said a vehicle driven by Alexander Shoemaker, 21, Waterloo, was traveling east and preparing to turn into a driveway when it collided with an oncoming vehicle driven by Donald Brown, Jr., 46, Butler.

Police said Brown’s vehicle crossed the double yellow line moments before the head-on crash. Police did not release the name of the passenger in Shoemaker’s vehicle.

Shoemaker and a passenger in his vehicle along with Brown were taken to a hospital in critical condition. Police said everyone was wearing seat belts and airbags deployed in both vehicles.

Shoemaker told police Brown’s vehicle did not have any headlights on. Investigators said they believe that was a factor in the crash, as well as the rainy conditions and time of day.

The crash is under investigation.
