FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IPFW softball team finished up its suspended game from Saturday and played a double header on Sunday to complete its series with Omaha. The Mastodons dropped the resumed game 17-6 and dropped the doubleheader 19-1 and 21-11.
Lauren Watson led the Mastodons with four hits in the series. Amber Davis and Demitra Burns had three base hits for the day. Sierra Miranda, Emily Olszewski, Kelly Pevely, and Caitlyn DeLong all grabbed two hits during the series.
In game one, Omaha got on the board first when they scored one run in the first inning. In the bottom half of the first inning, IPFW came back with five runs. Pevely and Taylor Gordy-Prescott both had RBI singles in the inning. The other three runs came off two Omaha errors.
In the second inning, Pevely scored on a passed ball to extend the IPFW lead to 6-1. Omaha took the lead when it scored runs in the final four innings to claim the victory.
Mastodons starting pitcher Elizabeth Snodgrass toed the rubber for 4 2-3 innings giving up seven runs. Burns came in for relief for the final 2 1-3 innings.
In the game one of the double header, the Mavericks scored one run in the second to take the early lead.
In the bottom of the third, the ‘Dons had an opportunity to get on the scoreboard when Watson reached base by an Omaha error and Olszewski also reached on an error. The rally stalled there as the final out was recorded.
Miranda led the fourth inning off with a single and advanced to second when Burns singled to right center. With two runners on, Davis smacked a double to right center, scoring Miranda. A strike out and ground out ended the rally for the Mastodons.
Sarah Lazarowich started in the circle for IPFW and pitched three innings of work. Snodgrass threw the final two innings in relief for Mastodons.
In the final game of the weekend was a wild one. After Omaha scored five runs in the top of the first, the ‘Dons responded with six of their own. IPFW loaded the bases in the first inning with three straight singles by Watson, Olszewski, and Miranda. The next batter, Pevely, pushed one run in when she reached base by an Omaha error. Later in the inning, Davis singled to center field and scored Miranda from third.
With the bases loaded, DeLong smashed a grand slam over the left-center field fence for her fifth home run of the season and gave the Mastodons a 6-5 lead.
In the second inning, with runners on first and second, Burns singled up the middle and brought around Olszewski to score from second. Again, DeLong came up with the bases loaded and hit a single through the left side to score two more for the ‘Dons.
Later in the inning, Jenna Balthazor reached on an error, scoring the tenth run of the game for the Mastodons.
In the bottom of the fourth, Balthazor drew a walk with the bases loaded to score the final IPFW run.
Snodgrass started and suffered the loss, throwing 1 1-3 innings before Lazarowich came on to pitch the final 3 2-3 innings out of the bullpen.
The team returns to action when it travels to Western Michigan for a non-league game on April 6 with first pitch set for 4 p.m.
