Victim of gun battle dies, death ruled homicide

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) A man found shot in a car after gunfire rang out between two vehicles on the city’s southeast side last week has died.

Brandon Lamar Phillips, 28, found by police March 17 suffering from gunshot wounds inside a Dodge along Oliver Street, died Tuesday of gunshot wounds, the Allen County Coroner said Friday. His death was ruled the county’s sixth homicide of 2016.

Fort Wayne police responded to a call of shots fired on Bowser Avenue just before 11 p.m. March 17. When they searched the area, they found a black Dodge on the 4500 block of Oliver Street that had crashed into a parked car.

When officers approached the Dodge, they Phillips inside. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Officer did not say where he was shot or how many wounds he suffered. Officers did find shell casings from more than one caliber of weapon at the scene.

Witnesses said a black Jeep fled the area. Later, officer located an SUV of that description a few blocks away on the 4700 block of Winter Street. The vehicle was impounded for processing.

A second shooting victim showed up to a Fort Wayne Hospital later in the night. That male victim was listed in serious condition. It’s not known how many times he was shot or where. Officers do not know the relationship between the two victims, but they believe they are connected.
