SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The IPFW women’s basketball team dropped its opening round game of The Summit League Championship to South Dakota State 80-60, ended the Mastodon’s season with a 7-23 overall record.
The ‘Dons were led by Allyson Bunch with 19 points on the afternoon, shooting 7-of-12 from the floor. Courtney Ogle added 15 points and five rebounds in her final game as a Mastodon. Fellow senior Kamilah Carter finished her career with 13 points to go along with five rebounds, and a team-high three assists and two steals. Keanna Gary led IPFW with seven rebounds and three blocks.
The two sides traded runs in the first quarter. After the Jackrabbits began the game on a 9-0 advantage, the Mastodons responded with five straight. SDSU closed the first period with a 10-0 run as IPFW trailed 19-5.
The Mastodons held South Dakota State to 35 percent shooting in the first half, but the ‘Dons had trouble of their own managing to finish 23.1 percent. Peyton Fallis hit a pair of free throws right as time expired, pulling IPFW to 36-19 at the break.
The Mastodon defense was unable to hold SDSU to another tough shooting quarter, as the Jacks connected on 71.4 percent in the third quarter. IPFW held its own scoring 20 points in the frame, but the ‘Dons found themselves trailing 65-39 heading to the fourth.
After the Jackrabbits scored the first five points of the final period, the ‘Dons responded by scoring 11 straight, nine of which came from Bunch. The IPFW defense held SDSU without a field goal for nearly five minutes of play, cutting the lead to 70-50, but was unable to make another run late.
For the game, the Mastodons shot 19-of-59 (32.2%) from the field, 7-of-23 (30.4%) on three-point attempts, and 15-of-22 (68.2%) at the free throw line.
