Top-ranked USF earns no. 1 seed at NAIA DII National Tournament

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Top-ranked University of Saint Francis will play North Star Athletic Association Tournament champion Dakota State University (S.D.) in the first round of the 25th annual NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball National Championship on Wed., March 9.

No. 1 NAIA Championship seed USF will play DSU at 2:45 p.m. Fort Wayne time at College of the Ozarks’ Keeter Gymnasium in Point Lookout, Mo. This will be the first meeting between the two schools. SDU is located in Madison, S.D.

The Trojans defeated Jamestown (N.D.) 79-65 as they claimed their fourth postseason tournament championship on Monday (Feb. 29). It was the ninth consecutive win for DSU, which has qualified for the national tournament four times in the last five seasons.

DSU is 5-4 in the NAIA Championship and finished the 2015-16 season 19-13 overall, 10-4 in the NSAA regular season. DSU is ranked No. 34 in the Coaches’ Top 25 Poll received votes.

USF (29-4) earned its eighth NAIA Championship berth, the Cougars’ sixth in the last seven seasons. USF has a 15-6 NAIA Championship record, 8-4 under the direction of Head Coach Chad LaCross, who is in his sixth season. USF has won 24 of its last 25 games and earned the Crossroads League automatic berth by winning the 2016 CL regular-season championship.
