IPFW tops WIU, clinches Summit League title

MACOMB, Ill. – Max Landis made five 3-pointers and finished with 24 points to lead IPFW to an 87-75 victory over Western Illinois on Thursday night for its fourth-straight win.
Landis was 7 of 14 from the field. John Konchar and Michael Calder added 19 points apiece for IPFW (23-7, 12-3 Summit League), which has its best record as a Division I program, and a one-game lead over South Dakota State atop the league standings. The Mastodons end their regular season Saturday at IUPUI.
Garret Covington scored 26 points on 9-of-20 shooting for Western Illinois (9-17, 2-13).
IPFW opened the second half with a 24-11 run to stretch its lead to 63-47 with 11 minutes left.  A 23-14 spurt, capped by Covington’s 3, pulled the Leathernecks to 77-70 with 4:28 remaining.  Calder answered with a layup and the Mastodons made eight free throws to seal it.
With the win IPFW clinched the Summit League title for the first time in program history and earned the top seed in the upcoming conference tournament in Sioux Falls.
By winning the regular season title the Mastodons are guaranteed a bid to the NIT postseason tournament – that is if they don’t win the Summit League tournament title and head to the NCAA tournament.
