1 dead after icy, slick roads cause crash

The Whitley County Sheriff's Department responded to the crash on State Road 9 Thursday morning

WHITLEY COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) Authorities in Whitley County said roads were icy and slick when a fatal crash happened Thursday morning.

According to the Whitley County Sheriff’s Department, around 6:15 a.m. on State Road 9, just north of County Road 500 E., an SUV slid into oncoming traffic, causing a chain reaction of crashes.

Investigators said the SUV, driven by Anna Baer, 22, of Columbia City, was going north and started to slide on the road; it then crossed the center line and hit a car driven by James Ratliff, 41, of Avilla.

Gregory Casey, 55, of Albion was south driving behind Ratliff. Casey’s car hit Baer’s SUV before a fourth SUV collided into his car. The fourth vehicle was driven by Brian S. Payton, 41, of Columbia City.

An ambulance took both Baer and Ratliff to a hospital. Authorities said Ratliff was later pronounced dead by medical staff. The other two drivers refused treatment.
