Officers arrived and found a red and green car had collided at the intersection of Broadway and Thompson Avenue. Police spokesperson Chris Felton said in the backseat of the red car officers found an unconscious man. He was taken to the hospital, where police said, he later passed away.

Police said the driver of the red car had fled the scene.

Investigators determined the red car was going northbound when, for an unknown reason, it collided with a green car in the southbound lane.

Police said it appeared the man in the back seat died from an overdose of some type. Felton said while initial observations did not indicate the crash contributed to the death, the Allen County Coroner’s Office will release the official case and manner of death later.

Investigators blocked off traffic in both directions on Broadway between Kinnaird and W. Packard avenues during the investigation.

Police are still trying to locate the driver of the red car.
