FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) The Fort Wayne Police Department on Monday released additional information about the officer and subject involved in a police action shooting on Saturday.
Officers were called around 10:30 a.m. Saturday to gas station on a report of a stolen vehicle, but details quickly sent investigators to a home in the 1600 block of Third Street. There, Fort Wayne Police Department spokesman Officer John Chambers said they came on a man running from a home.
Police chased the man into an alley, where Chambers said they ordered the man to stop running. Officers saw the man carrying a handgun and when he refused to drop his weapon, an officer fired at least one shot.
Fort Wayne police on Monday identified the officer involved in the shooting as 13-year veteran Jean P. Gigli. He has been placed on paid administrative leave, as is the department’s policy.
Gigli was previously suspended in 2011 for improper conduct, which police could not provide additional details on. He has also received three letter of commendations, and a Meritorious Service Citation.
The man shot was identified as 37-year-old Chad Allen Kinney. Police said he is in fair condition at a local hospital with a wound to his knee.
Kinney had been wanted on charges of forgery and receiving stolen property, both felonies. Police said the Fort Wayne man is expected to face additional charges related to the weekend incident.
