SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WANE) University of Notre Dame linebacker Jaylon Smith will forego his senior season with the Fighting Irish and declare for the NFL draft.
The former Bishop Luers High School standout announced his decision in a 55 second YouTube video Monday.
Smith, a junior, had reconstructive knee surgery last week to repair tears to his ACL and MCL suffered in the Fiesta Bowl. He had been projected as a possible top ten pick before the injury.
Smith was named a consensus football All-American for 2015 by the NCAA and was the 2015 Butkus Award recipient. The Fort Wayne native led Notre Dame in total tackles (113), solo tackles (68), assisted tackles (45), pass breakups (five) and fumble recoveries (two) during the regular season. He ranked third on the team with nine tackles for loss.
