Driver hospitalized after slamming into bridge support head-on

DEKALB COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) A Garrett woman was injured early Monday after her vehicle left the Interstate 69 pavement and slammed into a bridge abutment in lower DeKalb County.

Police, a fire crew and medics were called just before 5 a.m. to the 322 milemarker of I-69, at C.R. 68 near the DeKalb-Allen counties line, on a report of a crash there.

Investigators said Julia A. Steward, 55, of Garrett was southbound on the interstate when her 2005 GMC Envoy left the east side of the roadway and veered into the median, struck yellow safety barrels and slammed head-on into the C.R. 68 bridge abutment, according to a DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department report.

Steward suffered pain to both knees and right wrist in the crash, the report said. She was taken to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne for treatment.

The GMC sustained damage to its entire front bumper, the report said.

It’s not clear why the SUV went off the roadway.
