FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Keanna Gary’s first career double-double was not enough to help the IPFW women’s basketball team overcome IUPUI as it opened Summit League play and ultimately fell 69-50 to the Jaguars at home.
Gary earned the first double-double for the Mastodons this season with 10 points and 10 rebounds. It is the first for IPFW since KeShyra McCarver did so at Illinois in the 2014-15 season opener. Gary and Rachel Rinehart tied with a team-high three steals. Rinehart put up a team-high 11 points to go along with five rebounds and three assists for the ‘Dons.
After being down 18-9 in the first quarter, IPFW went on a 12-3 run to tie the game 21-21. The Mastodon offense was unable to convert over the final 8:29 of the second quarter, as IUPUI closed out the half on a 10-0 run to lead 31-21.
Rinehart opened the third quarter with a layup to break the ‘Dons scoreless streak, but IPFW was only able to put up nine points in the quarter. The Mastodons went on a 16-3 run in a 5:29 stretch in the fourth quarter to pull within 14 of the Jaguars. IUPUI closed out the game on a 7-2 advantage as IPFW was unable to make a final push.
As a team, the ‘Dons connected on 20-of-54 (37.0%) of their field goals, including 3-of-15 (20.0%) from beyond the arc, and 7-of-11 (63.6%) at the free throw line.
IPFW returns to the court against Western Illinois on January 7 at the Gates Center for a 7 p.m. tip.
