Komets put up fight, fall in overtime to Brampton

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – A Garrett Meurs goal with 2:10 left in regulation would send the game into overtime but Mike Vernace’s tally at 3:04 in OT was the difference Tuesday night as the Komets fell to Brampton 4-3 at War Memorial Coliseum.

The Beast jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 6:14 into the first period on a Steven Kaunisto goal. However, Nikita Kashirsky’s power play goal with 53 seconds left in the frame knotted the game at 1-1. It was Kashirsky’s fifth tally of the season.

Zach McCullough and Brandon Marino – a former team MVP of the Komets – would score back-to-back goals to give Brampton a 3-1 lead at 9:24 in the second period. Just 24 seconds later Shawn Szydlowski would net a power play goal – his tenth goal of the season – to cut Brampton’s lead to 3-2.

With 2:10 left in the third frame Meurs would score his fifth goal of the season on power play, sending the game to overtime.

Vernace’s game winner in OT beat Komets goalie Pat Nagle, who stopped 25 of 29 shots on the night.

All three of Fort Wayne’s goal came on the power play, with the K’s going 3-for-11 with the advantage.

The Komets will return to action Thursday night when they host the Indy Fuel at 7:30 p.m.
