FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) Students at North Side High School will decide Tuesday on a new school nickname.
The prevailing nickname will be announced to students Thursday, Fort Wayne Community Schools spokeswoman Krista Stockman said.
After the vote, the district’s board will not vote to approve it. Stockman said a nickname committee, of which a board member was part of, already deemed the previous eight finalists as acceptable.
The new North Side nickname will go into place during the 2016-17 school year. Stockman said the Class of 2016 will graduate as Redskins.
The decision was made earlier this year to change the nickname and mascot due to controversy surrounding the current Redskins nickname and its perceived offensive nature towards Native Americans.
The Redskins nickname was first used by the school in 1927.
