FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – When the Bishop Dwenger football team started the year with a loss to Bishop Luers, not many people believed this Saints team was poised for deep postseason run. (12-1) Dwenger is proving their doubters wrong, winning the SAC and winning a regional title with a 8-0 win over Plymouth.
This is Dwenger’s third regional championship in the last five years. They will play at South Bend St. Joseph in semi-state this Friday with the winner moving on to the 4A state championship.
Friday’s semi-state game will be all the more special for Dwenger. Long time head coach Chris Svarczkopf will be on the sidelines for the Saints after missing most of this season undergoing treatment for cancer. Interim head coach Ernie Bojrab has led Dwenger in his absence.
“We are a team centered around one man, and that man is Coach Svarczkopf,” says quarterback Blake Podschlne. “We want to win this one for him.”
