The man, who the university said was armed with a dark-colored handgun, fled after the assault. Around 4:30 a.m., police were still out searching for the individual, who was described as a black male, in his early 20s, with facial hair, wearing dark clothing and a hat. Investigators said the man had not been located in the Brownstone area.

Just before 6 a.m., officials said the investigation was ongoing, but the immediate threat was over. They told students and staff it was safe to be out on campus and call police to report suspicious activity.

This is the second armed assault in Bloomington in just a few days. Last Friday, a female student was attacked near the Sample Gates on campus.

Anyone with information is asked to call IU Police, Bloomington Police or 911.
