Girl ejected, killed in airborne crash

LAGRANGE COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) A 12-year-old girl was killed early Thursday when the vehicle she was riding in veered off a LaGrange County roadway and down an embankment before it slammed into a utility pole.

Police and medics were called around 7:45 a.m. Thursday to a stretch of C.R. 675 West near 3540 North 675 West in Newbury Township on a report of a vehicle crash.

Police said Isaac N. Hunter of Shipshewana was speeding southbound on C.R. 675 West with two children in a 1998 Buick Century when it came out of a curve and passed a horse and buggy, according to LaGrange County Sheriff’s investigators. At that point, police said Hunter lost control of Buick and it went off the roadway’s east side, its front bumper and undercarriage hitting an embankment.

The impact shot up the vehicle’s rear and rotated it, sending it airborne and backward 60 feet, police said. It traveled another eight feet after it landed before it struck a utility pole, police said.

A 12-year-old girl was ejected out of the Buick’s back window. She was pronounced dead at the scene. She has not been named. Police said the girl was not wearing a seat belt.

Hunter was taken to Parkview Hospital. Another passenger in the Buick, 16-year-old Joshua N. Hunter, was taken to Parkview Hospital with pain.
