Satellite voting locations open Wed. for early voting

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) For the first time ever in Allen County voters will have the opportunity to cast their early vote at any of the five locations they choose with the new satellite locations.

Early voting is pretty much on par compared to years past, but Director of Elections Beth Dlug said mail-ins are down.

“Our mail absentee ballots are low this year, quite a bit lower than usual, about 2,000,” Dlug said. “That’s a little disappointing.”

Dlug is hoping some of those people will take advantage of a new voting option. For years, voters wanting to cast their ballot early had one option – drive downtown to the Rousseau Centre, but now they can take their pick between five locations throughout the city.

“We’ve already gotten some feedback from people that we’ve been talking to on the phones that are really excited, especially since mailed absentee ballots deadline has passed,” Dlug said.

It doesn’t matter which precinct you live in, you can vote at the Aboite, Dupont, Georgetown or Hessen Cassel Libraries. Dlug doesn’t expect to see a spike in voting numbers, but thinks voters will be happy with the change.

“I think most of the counties that do early voting will tell you it probably doesn’t do a lot as far as voter turnout, but the people who do turn out find it much, much more convenient,” Dlug said.

The concept is the same as vote centers, but Dlug said right now that’s not something Allen County is equip to move to. However, new iPads at the polls will help gather information needed when considering the switch.

“We have some voting machine issues that we need to take care of before we can go to a vote center, and then we’re also looking at places that are capable of being vote centers. Being a large county it’s easy for us to assign people to go to locations then we can kind of control that traffic,” Dlug said.
