Local teacher among 8 arrested in DNR undercover sting operation

ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) Police arrested eight men on charges of public indecency, battery and public nudity after complaints from the public prompted an investigation by the Indiana State Department of Natural Resources.

The men were arrested during a two day undercover investigation on Oct. 20 and 21 on the Maumee River Public Access Site in Allen County, just outside Woodburn. According to a release from the DNR, the men exposed themselves and/or fondled conservation officers dressed in plain clothes.

Among the men arrested was New Haven Middle School teacher Darryl Springer. According to court documents, the undercover officer followed Springer into a wooded area. After talking for a few minutes Springer allegedly touched the male officer’s groin. He then asked the officer to go deeper into the woods, according to investigators. He faces a public indecency and battery charges.

EACS has confirmed Springer, 48, is a teacher in their district and he is now on administrative leave.  According to school board minutes from 2013, Springer was nominated as teacher of the year for New Haven Middle School.

The following other people were arrested and charged with the following misdemeanors:

Jerry Brandon, 64, of Fort Wayne- Public Indecency, Public Nudity
George Ocock, 78, of New Haven- Public Indecency, Battery
Duwayne Porter, 33, of New Haven- Public Indecency, Public Nudity
Stephen Runyon, 51, of Fort Wayne- Public Indecency, Public Nudity
William Bercot, 86, of Fort Wayne- Public Indecency, Battery
Thomas Nelson, 61, of Fort Wayne- Public Indecency, Battery
Cory Cooper, 44, of Payne OH- Public Nudity, Public Indecency

All eight men have been banned from DNR properties for a year as a result of the investigation.
