Potential robbery foiled by shooting

One person shot during a home invasion on Guildford Avenue.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Detectives have learned three people barricaded themselves inside an apartment that was being broken into by two men. The man inside trying to hold the door shut was nearly shot when one of the men breaking in fired a shotgun at the door.

That’s when police said the man holding the door got a gun, and after the two would-be robbers entered their room, he fired several rounds at them. One of the men breaking into the apartment, a 19-year-old, was shot. The second man then fled the scene.

The Fort Wayne Police Department responded Monday around 6:05 a.m. to reports of a shooting in the 700 block of Guildford Avenue at the corner of South Wayne Avenue, south of downtown.

FWPD spokesperson Michael Joyner said when officers arrived they found the teen suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He said the teen was transported to a hospital where doctors said he was in critical condition.

“The individual shot that’s in critical condition is one of two suspects who attempted a home invasion,” Joyner said.

Police used a K-9 in an attempt to track the second subject, but that was unsuccessful. Police are searching for him. Joyner described the missing man as a white male.

Joyner said no one else was harmed and nothing was reported stolen from the apartment. Officers at the scene recovered a shotgun, which is believed to have been used by one of the men breaking in the apartment, Joyner said.
