Woman shot while walking with young daughter

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) A mother was shot midday Monday as she walked with her children along the a south-side roadway.

Fort Wayne police were called around noon Monday to the Marathon gas station at 3502 Hanna St., near Oxford Street, after a woman ran there with a gunshot wound.

According to a police incident report, the woman told police she had been walking with her 4-year-old daughter down Oxford Street near Hanna Street when she was shot by a man in a fishing hat inside a late-model green or blue minivan. The woman said her son was with her, as well, but he ran off after the shooting, the report said.

The woman was hit in the lower left arm, the report said. She was hospitalized in good condition.

The woman could not say why she was victimized.

Police found four .380 shell casings along the roadway. Police told NewsChannel 15 at the scene that they believe the shooting happened near the Richards Unisex Barbershop at 714 Oxford St., where investigators found the shell casings.

The woman then fled to the gas station.

Police have made no arrests in the case.

While police investigations, Fort Wayne Community Schools put nearby Ward Education Center and Weisser Park Elementary on a lockout, with doors and windows secured and entry into the buildings restricted. It was lifted shortly later.
