FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) Longtime local eatery the Rib Room announced Monday it will close after serving diners for nearly 60 years.
Manager Christina Filippou, whose family has owned the Rib Room since it opened in 1957, said Monday that “it is with a very deep and heavy heart” that the family closes the restaurant. Filippou said her father, owner Sam Filippou, is retiring and the family cannot continue operating the restaurant.
“We want to thank all of our wonderful and loyal customers and the city of Fort Wayne for allowing us the opportunity to do business for nearly 60 years,” Christina Filippou said.
“It has been an honor serving this amazing community. We will be forever grateful for this opportunity to have served you all.”
The closure comes a year after the Filippou family sold the Rib Room’s iconic building to the Matt, Kurt and Chris Henry, a move that made way for the opening of the trendy Nick’s Martini and Wine Bar within the 1235 E. State Blvd. location. Nick’s opened in February with the Rib Room continuing on the other side.
The restaurant broke news of its closure on its Facebook page Monday, and taped a written letter on its glass entryway.
Christina Filippou offered thanks to both the guests of the restaurant and its staff.
“The Filippou family also would like to thank all of their employees who have worked at the restaurant throughout the years,” she said. “The Filippous will always consider their employees, as well as many of their regular customers, as part of their family. Sam and Ursula Filippou, and daughters Joann, Aliki and Christina would like to thank everyone again for all of the love and support they have received over the years.”
