Police were called around 12:45 p.m. to the Cap n’ Cork store at 604 E. Lewis St. Joyner said the shooting was the result of a disturbance involving four people.
As officers were responding, two individuals were seen leaving the scene, one in what was described as a blue passenger car and the second on foot, according to police.
Officers stopped the passenger car at the intersection of Hanna and Wallace streets. The driver was detained. Joyner added Tuesday that the driver was actually the victim’s brother and he was on his way to tell family what happened.
The second subject was stopped about two blocks south of Cap n’ Cork at Hanna and Hayden streets.
The man who was bleeding from his head, was actually trying to intervene as a good Samaritan at the liquor store, Joyner said. He was injured when he was hit on the head with the gun. He was not seriously hurt.
Joyner said inside the Cap n’ Cork store, officers found the male victim, who was later identified as Peter M. Major, 46. He was transported to a hospital where he was last listed in critical condition.
Police say investigators were then able to pinpoint 53-year-old Homer T Richards as the suspect responsible for the shooting. Later in the evening, Fort Wayne and Allen County officers surrounded an apartment in the 800 block of Dolphin Drive and after several hours of talking, were able to arrest Richards. He was charged with Aggravated Battery.
