Inmates evacuated after jail fills with smoke

A small fire broke out in cell block B at the Allen County Jail on Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2015.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) Inmates at the Allen County Jail were briefly evacuated after smoke flooded a cell block early Tuesday.

According to Allen County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Steve Stone, a maintenance worker was using a grinder in cell block B of the Allen County Jail around 8:45 a.m. when a spark flew off and into the ventilation system. No flames were visible but smoke rose throughout the immediate area in the cell block, Stone said.

A crew used fans to blow the smoke out. It did not require an extinguishing, Stone said.

Some 50-60 inmates were moved from the block to the jail’s outdoor recreation area while the block was aired out. Stone said took less than two minutes to evacuate the inmates.
