INDIANAPOLIS (WANE) — An Indiana State Trooper is recovering after he was shot during a gunfight that ended with the suspect being shot and killed.
Just before 3:00pm, Indiana State Police officers were conducting undercover surveillance on a man near the Eagle Point Apartment complex located near 6600 W. 46th Street in Indianapolis. The suspect was the target of an ongoing drug investigation. An undercover officer, wearing a vest with the word “police” on the front, got out of his car to approach the suspect, who was on foot.
According to police, the suspect pulled out a gun and pointed it toward the trooper, who took cover behind a vehicle. The suspect fled and a foot pursuit ensued with the suspect reportedly pointing the handgun at officers during the chase. The suspect jumped over a privacy fence with a trooper following close behind, after which shots were fired.
The pursuing trooper was shot in the left hand index finger. He was taken to the hospital, treated, and released. He will undergo outpatient surgery within the next couple of weeks and is expected to fully recover. The suspect, who was also shot, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The names of the trooper and the suspect are not anticipated to be released for at least 24 hours.
An investigation into the shooting will take place and information will be submitted to the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office for review and action as deemed appropriate by that office.
