FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) The men accused of an August robbery of a discount store that left one critically injured after being shot by police have been formally charged.
According to documents filed in Allen Superior Court on Wednesday, Anthony Gant, 43, and Christopher Johnson,31, have been charged with two counts each of both robbery and criminal confinement, all Level 3 felonies.
On Aug. 23, Gant and Johnson entered the Dollar General located at 3121 E. State Blvd. around 8:15 p.m. The affidavit for probable cause indicated Gant was carrying a gun and demanded cash and cigarettes from an employee. The employee and a customer were then tied up inside.
At the time of the incident, Public Safety Director Rusty York said the Dollar General clerk was on the phone with a friend when the men entered. The friend overheard their exchange and reported the robbery to police.
When the two men tried to leave, they saw an officer coming around the back of the store. Johnson and Gant ran to the front door. Johnson ran out first but Gant was shot by an officer and fell inside the first door of the store, according to court documents. Johnson ran down the road and was arrested shortly after.
The affidavit also said that police found about $1,680 next to where Gant fell.
The officer who fired his weapon at Gant, Officer Daniel L. Hartman, was placed on administrative leave following the shooting. The other officers involved, Jason Palm and Bradley Griffin were also placed on leave, which is the department’s policy.
