Crash in Huntington County kills 1, injures 3

HUNTINGTON COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) A Monday evening crash in Huntington County killed a passenger in one of the vehicles.

Police and medics were called around 9:15 p.m. Monday night to the intersection of S.R. 124 and S.R. 9 on a report of a crash.

According to a Huntington County Sheriff’s Department crash report, a pickup driven by Bonnie W. Welch, 79, of Glenwood Pike, Arkansas, was stopped on westbound S.R. 124 at the intersection with S.R. 9. Another vehicle driven by Rita Durkes, 68, of Marion, had been southbound on S.R. 9 when Welch proceeded into the intersection and into Durkes’ path.

The crash sent both vehicles into a ditch on the southwest corner of the intersection, each flipped on their tops.

A passenger in Welch’s vehicle, 76-year-old Amanda Welch of Glenwood Pike, Arkansas, was killed in the collision, the report said.

Her husband, Bonnie Welch, suffered undetermined injuries and was taken by ambulance to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne in serious condition. Durkes suffered undetermined injures and was airlifted to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne in critical condition. An passenger in her vehicle, 39-year-old Kyle Kirby of Marion, was taken by ambulance to Parkview Regional Medical Center in fair condition.

A news release Tuesday morning said the Welchs were traveling to Andrews, Indiana, to visit relatives.

The sheriff’s department said it is still investigating the crash.
