STEUBEN COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) – An Ashley man has been formally charged in a June crash on I-69 that killed a motorcyclist.
Chet Gilbert, 36, was charged with Level 4 causing death operating a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol content of .15 percent or greater, the fallout from a June 21 crash that killed 52-year-old Brian Platten of North York, Ontario, Canada, our news partners KPC News reports. Gilbert was arrested Friday and was released from the Steuben County Jail on bond.
Investigators at the crash said Gilbert’s SUV rear-ended Platten’s motorcycle on the interstate just north of Ashley around 2:30 a.m. Deputies found Platten’s body along the shoulder of the interstate, thrown from his motorcycle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Steuben County Coroner’s Office said Platten, who had been wearing a helmet, died of blunt force trauma.
Gilbert was not hurt, but was taken to an area hospital for an evaluation after suffering from an anxiety attack.
Police at the time said alcohol might have been a factor in the fatal crash.
