COLLINS, Ind. (WANE) – A big fire destroyed a house in Collins, between Columbia City and Churubusco, Sunday night.
Firefighters told NewsChannel 15 that they were called to a garage fire at 5730 E. Smith Street around 8 p.m., but arrived to find the two-story house fully engulfed in flames. The Churubusco Fire Department was the first on the scene and Chief Kris Bair took the video of the flames above. Bair said the house collapsed within minutes of their arrival.
Eight departments ended up being called in to get the fire under control. There are no fire hydrants in Collins, so all the water was brought in by tanker trucks. Firefighters said the covered porch that wraps all the way around the house is what fueled the fire to spread quickly.
“When the garage started, the fire went underneath that overhang spreading directly around the house. With the older style construction in went right into the walls and straight to the second floor and attic. The house was fully engulfed upon our arrival,” Bair said.
Bair said they were told the owners were not home at the time. No injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
