Old Luers

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Each Thursday during the prep football season WANE-TV will turn back the clock during the 6 p.m. news with the new segment “Throwback Thursday.”

Steve Keefer – who was inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame this past summer – led the Knights to the title. Keefer now serves as the freshman coach at Luers,In the inaugural edition, WANE takes a look back at the 1985 2A state championship team at Bishop Luers, the vaunted program’s first of 11 state title squads.

Cal Miller was the star of the 1985 title game that saw the Knights down heavily-favored Lawrenceburg 25-7. Miller, who would go on to star at I.U., scored three touchdowns, including a 70-yard punt return for a score in the second quarter that swung the game’s momentum in favor of the Knights. Miller is currently a civil litigation lawyer for Carson Boxberger in downtown Fort Wayne.

Quarterback Tom Minnick’s life still revolves around the game. Minnick, who played at Missouri-Rolla, is entering his eighth season as the head coach at Arizona Western, a junior college football powerhouse.

On an interesting side note, the 1985 Air Jordan shoes that Miller wore to the 1985 title game are on display in the trophy case outside of the athletic director’s office at Luers. According to Keefer, each time the Knights went down to the Hoosier Dome to play in a state title game, a member of the team would wear Miller’s old shoes in remembrance of the 1985 team.

The 2015 Knights will host Bishop Dwenger Friday in the Highlight Zone “Game of the Week.”
