IPFW Volleyball Picked Sixth In Summit League

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IPFW women’s volleyball team was picked to finish sixth in the Summit League preseason poll of the league’s head coaches. The Mastodons received 28 points, tying with Omaha, as coaches were not allowed to vote for their own teams.

Defending Summit League champion Denver was selected as the favorite to win the 2015 volleyball crown. The Pioneers collected seven first-place votes and 63 total points in the poll. This marks the second straight season that Denver has been voted The Summit League’s preseason number one.

The Mastodons return two starters from a season ago in Somer Johnson and Sarah Heckman. Johnson earned All-League Honorable Mention honors a season ago, finishing 13th in the Summit League with 2.77 kills per set. Heckman and fellow returnee Natasha Medic finished last season tied for 12th in the league with 0.85 blocks per set.

The Mastodon season kicks off with the two-day IPFW Invitational sponsored by Hyatt Place, beginning August 28. The ‘Dons will play host to Central Michigan, Eastern Illinois, and UIC.
