Man killed in fiery I-69 crash ID’d

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) The man killed in a fiery crash on Interstate 69 Thursday has been identified.

Nelson E. Hyatt, 40, of Angola was died of blunt force trauma, the result of a Thursday crash that saw his pickup cross into oncoming traffic on the highway and explode, the Allen County Coroner’s Office said Tuesday. His death marks the 19th traffic fatality for Fort Wayne and Allen County this year, the coroner’s office said.

Around 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Hyatt was headed northbound on the interstate around the 317 milemarker when it veered through the median and into southbound traffic. It then clipped the rear axle of a semi tanker, which took the rear axle completely off.

The truck then caught on fire. A fire department responded and was able to put the fire out quickly.

Hyatt was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no other reported injuries.

The interstate was closed for several hours while police and medics responded.
