City, TinCaps join for Play Ball initiative

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) The City of Fort Wayne and the Fort Wayne TinCaps announced Tuesday a partnership to promote the Play Ball initiative that encourages community participation in the game of baseball.

Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry announced the partnership.

The Play Ball initiative is a joint effort between the United States Conference of Mayors, Major League Baseball and Minor League Baseball. It focuses on the fun nature of baseball and encourages widespread participation in related activities.

During August, mayors across the country implemented the initiative with the goal of strengthening the connection between communities and baseball.

The city and TinCaps encouraged families and individuals to find time to play catch, run bases in the backyard, and implement baseball activities into family gatherings. In addition, the city and TinCaps worked on programming details for special events and opportunities for the Play Ball program as part of the 2016 baseball season for the TinCaps at Parkview Field.

“We’re fortunate to be part of a community that values and appreciates baseball and our own Fort Wayne TinCaps,” said Henry. “We encourage everyone to take some time this month to enjoy baseball and get involved in a fun activity with family and friends. Fort Wayne is a leader in quality of life amenities and opportunities for residents to have a healthy lifestyle.”

TinCaps President Mike Nutter said the initiative is a chance to push the benefits of baseball in Fort Wayne.

“The Fort Wayne TinCaps are honored to partner with the City on this important effort to promote the benefits of baseball,” said Nutter. “We’re in an enviable position to be at Parkview Field and have a tremendous environment for professional baseball. Play Ball is a great opportunity to highlight how baseball makes a meaningful difference in our community.”

The initiative falls in line with the city’s Operation Fight for a Fitter Fort program, a community wellness initiative to encourage individuals to implement lifestyle changes that include fitness, nutrition, wellness and activities.
