STEUBEN COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) A woman swimming on Lake James Saturday was hospitalized after she was hit by a motorboat.
According to the Indian Department of Natural Resources, Ruth Petitti, 65, of LaGrange was swimming around 2 p.m. in the second basin of the lake, south of Eli’s Point. She swam into rough water where her boat had been moved when she was hit.
The driver of the motorboat was identified as Matthew Gumbel, 38, of Angola. Gumbel and other witnesses told investigators that Petitti was not visible while swimming due to the rough and choppy water.
Petitti’s husband and other bystanders pulled her out of the lake. She was transported to a hospital in Fort Wayne with open fractures to her foot and other injuries to her lower leg.
Police said alcohol was not a factor in the accident.
This incident is still under investigation by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
On Monday, the DNR said Petitti was expected to make a full recovery.
