FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) As the city begins to clean up from last weeks floods, there are two ways to get rid of the sandbags.
People can take sandbags to the City Utilities Biosolids facility at 6202 Lake Avenue. The normal disposal fee has been waved. The Biosolids facility is open from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday thru Saturday and 12:00 noon to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday. The facility will be closed on July 4, 2015.
Residents can also call 311 to have sandbags picked up at a person’s home. Because of the large volume of debris and sandbags, along with the busy summer schedule on road improvement projects, the pick-up at the curb is not immediate. The sandbags will be collected within two weeks of the call to 311. When calling 311, residents should be specific with the address where the sandbags are placed at the curb.
In some cases flood water can contain bacteria and the sandbags could be a health risk. Health officials suggest using latex gloves to dispose of flood drenched sandbags.
The sandbags and clay placed by the City will be removed by the City. That work is expected to not be completed until late August.
