Victim identified in head-on crash on St. Joe Road

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – One person died in a two-vehicle crash on St. Joe Road north of Fort Wayne Wednesday night.

Emergency personnel were called to St. Joe Road north of Notestine Road shortly after 10 p.m.

The Allen County Sheriff’s Department said one person was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities said another person was transported to the hospital in critical condition and another person was transported in fair condition.

An SUV and passenger car collided head-on and came to a stop in the northbound lane. The crash happened on the narrow road near a curve and at the top of a small hill. Police have not said what might have caused the crash.

The Allen County Coroner’s Office has identified the man who died as Derek E. Cervantes, 29, of Fort Wayne. His death has been ruled an accident by blunt force trauma.

St. Joe Road was closed while crews investigated and cleaned up the crash.

Cervantes’ death is the 16th traffic fatality in Allen County in 2015. The release from the coroner’s office said it’s not clear if he was wearing a seat belt or if alcohol was a factor in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation by the Allen County Police Department and the Allen County Coroner’s Office.
