Vision Walk fights blindness one step at a time

These bright colored t-shirts were worn at the Vision Walk on Saturday, June 13, 2015.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) Walking to end blindness. That’s what hundreds spent their Saturday morning at Headwaters Park doing.

The walk raises money for the Foundation Fighting Blindness, which researches vision-robbing diseases.

Now in its ninth year, Vision Walk Chair Brenda Niccum hopes to raise $55,000.

She knows from personal experience, losing vision really changes lives.

“It’s really difficult because it limits your independence sometimes. The ability to drive for some people is an issue. It’s things you don’t think about like going to the grocery store, finding things on the shelf, organizing your house, things like that,” said Brenda Niccum, Vision Walk Chair.

Right before the event started they had a little more than $50,000 raised. Last year, the walk raised a total of $62,000.

NewsChannel 15’s Gina Glaros served as the event’s emcee.
