Excise police bust illegal cigarette making operation

An illegal cigarette machine is loaded onto a truck following an investigation by Indiana State Excise Police in South Bend on Monday, June 8, 2015.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WANE) Indiana State Excise Police Officers seized 245 bags of loose tobacco, three cigarette making machines, and 104,000 cigarette tubes from a South Bend tobacco shop Monday afternoon.

Officers made the seizures from US 31 Tobacco #2 located at 50570 US 933 North. The machines were allegedly being used in combination with the loose tobacco and cigarette tubes in order to manufacture cigarettes.

The location was cited for the preliminary administrative violations of operating without a manufacture’s certificate, possession of contraband tobacco products, and failing to follow requirements that cigarettes offered for sale must be fire safe as well as contained in original packaging.

No arrests were made and the administrative violations will be referred to the Indiana Alcohol and Tobacco Commission’s Prosecutor’s office.
