Father leaves children at home to buy cocaine

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) A man faces several charges, including child neglect, after admitting to police he left two of his children at home and took his 2-month-old with him to go buy cocaine.

An officer with the Fort Wayne Police Department pulled over Michael L. Johnson, 26, of Fort Wayne around 3 a.m. Friday. During the stop, Johnson told the officer he had left his four- and five- year-olds at his apartment for nearly 45 minutes while he went out to purchase cocaine.

Johnson’s 2-month-old infant was in the car at the time. Under its car seat police found the cocaine wrapped in a piece of paper, according to a police report.

Other officers went to check on the apartment and found the door unlocked. The children were found asleep and were put into the custody of their mother.

Johnson faces the following charges:

3 counts of neglect of a dependent, felonies

Possession of cocaine, a felony

Taking a child into a nuisance, a misdemeanor
