Downtown events for everyone Saturday

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) On top of thousands of bike riders participating in the Fort4Fitness Spring Cycle, the downtown area has dozens of events for everyone. Whether you want to spend the Saturday shopping, checking out some birds at the hawk raptor rehab or if you want to pick up a new comic you’ve never read before, there is an event to get involved in.

The following is a list of several of the events going on in the area:

Kickstart downtown

Entertainment

When: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Where: Entertainment stage at Arts United Center, 300 E. Main Street

Description: Listen to bands from the Sweetwater Academy of Music.

     Fairy Tale Fest

When: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Where: Arts united Center, 300 E. Main Street
$20, purchase at the Artstix Community Box office

Description: Enjoy performances from the Youtheatre, Dance Collective and Ballet. FAME will also host a hands-on craft tent with costuming, puppets and face painting.

             Cycle Fest

When: 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Where: Arts United Center, 300 E. Main Street

Description: Twenty bike and fitness vendors will set up on Main Street along with various food trucks.

The Great American Cleanup

When: 8 a.m. to 9 a.m.
Where: Various parts of the city

Description: Volunteers will pick up different areas of the city where unsightly trash built up over the winter. In 2014, more than 5,000 volunteers collected more than 183,000 poinds of litter and debris from Fort Wayne neighborhoods, parks, roads, trials and rivers.

Derby Girls Spring Roll

When: 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. (continues on Sunday)
Where: Allen County War Memorial Coliseum, 4000 Parnell Ave.
Adult- $25
Child age 6-17- $15
Saturday after 4 p.m.
Adult- $12
Child age 6-17- $7

Description: It’s a battle of the bouts at with more than 20 derby teams from across the country competing in a tournament all weekend. The tournament is open to the public. For a more detailed schedule, click here.  

Spring Trolley Shopping

When: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Where: Downtown

Description: Get your shopping on with the annual Downtown Improvement District’s shopping Saturday. Trolleys will be all over downtown for people to catch. Park, then ride the trolley between exciting activities like Fairytale Fest, Barr Street Market, Appleseed Comic Con and more, while being connected to some of your favorite Downtown restaurants and shops.

Barr Street Market Opens

When:  9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Where: Corner of Barr and Wayne Streets, just south of the History Center

Description: Local and regional groups bring their plants, honey, meats, baked goods and produce to the market, which traces back to 1837.

Fort Wayne Farmers Market closes for the season

When: 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.,
Where: Parkview Field’s Lincoln Financial Events Center

Soarin’ Hawk Raptor Expo

When: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Where: Franke Park Pavilion no. 1, adjacent to the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo.

Description: The expo features live presentations of birds of prey, including Jefferson the Bald Eagle, Apollo the Great Horned Owl, Ruby the Red-tailed Hawk and a new addition – Felix the Barn Owl. The presentations are scheduled for 1 and 4 p.m.

Spring bonsai show

When:  10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Where: Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory, 1100 South Calhoun Street
Adult- $3
Child age 3+ $2

Description: Explore a forest of miniature trees carefully trained and pruned by members of Fort Wayne’s bonsai club.

Ride for the Red Blood Drive

When: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Where: Ehlerding’s River City Harley-Davidson, 5525 State Road 930 East.

Description: Ride for the Red blood drives honor fallen riders and help raise awareness of safety for all on the roads as well as the constant need for blood.

Appleseed Comic Con 2015

When: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (continues Sunday.)
Where: Grand Wayne Convention Center, 120 W. Jefferson Boulevard
Ticket- $10- $15

Description: This show is to promote comics as an art form and get people to turn out and experience the community and medium that the comic enthusiasts all love

New Haven Lions Clubs BBQ Dinner Fundraising For Aaron Rorick

When: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Where: Ken’s Meat Market, 846 Lincoln Hwy E.
Meal price- $8.50

Description: Enjoy half a chicken, cole slaw and a roll while helping a student who’s hoping to be a foreign exchange student in the 2015 and 2016 school year.

13th Annual Lapper & Survivors Day Celebration

When: Registration starts at 9 a.m. Public Surivors Day celebration starts at 11 a.m.
Where: Brotherhood Office Park, 6316 Mutual Drive

Description: The Lapper is a special event to honor or memorialize people touched by cancer and is a fundraising walk to benefit Cancer Services’ clients. All of the money raised at the event stays in Northeast Indiana to help our friends and neighbors with cancer.

Relay for Life at Parkview Field

When: Noon to midnight
Where: Parkview Field, 1301 Ewing Street

Description: Saturday’s Relay For Life Opening Ceremony will take place at noon. A celebratory lap for cancer survivors is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Then at 9:00 p.m. there will be a Luminaria Celebration when candles are lit in honor and memory of people from the area who have battled cancer.

During Relay For Life, Parkview Field’s batting cages will be open from 1:00-4:00 p.m. The Shindigs FUN Zone will be open from 3:00-7:00 p.m.

FWPD Walk/Run

When: Walk starts at 9 a.m.
Where: Foster park in Fort Wayne, 3900 Old Mill Road

Description: The “Light it up BLUE” 5K Walk/Run benefits the Northeast Indiana Autism Connection.

Multiple Sclerosis Walk

When: Walk starts at 9 a.m.
Where: Headwaters Park East

Description: Money raised in the MS Walk event goes directly to research and programs for people living with the disease.

Take Steps Walk

When:  Check-in starts at 4 p.m.
Where: Indiana Trails Park, 10313 Aboite Center Rd

Description: The community is invited to celebrate and join in on raising funds for Crohn’s and Colitis.

Cherry Blossom movie screening 

When:12:30 p.m. and 320 p.m.
Where: Allen County Public Library, 900 Library Plaza in lower level theatre
Movie Admission – $5

Description: Oscar award winning film “The Tale of Princess Kaguya,” will be shown at the library a day before its Cherry Blossom festive. A previous post indicated the festival was on Saturday, when in fact, it’s on Sunday. Saturday’s event is just the film screening.

Moonshiner ‘Tickle’ signings

Description: Legendary moonshiner and television star Steven Ray ‘Tickle’ will meet with fans in Indiana to sign autographs and share Sugarlands Distilling Company moonshine.
