MACOMB, Ill. – The IPFW women’s track & field team set two school records – from Kiawna Cottrell and Brittany Beard – sending the same pair to the finals, as the Mastodons have set themselves up for a strong final day of the 2015 Summit League Championships.
Cottrell led a trio of Mastodon competitors in the 100-meter dash, advancing to the finals in her school-record time of 12.28 – the eighth-fastest time in the preliminaries. Whitney Hampton sprinted to a time of 12.97, a season-best, Tori VanDiepenbos took 19th in the field with a time of 14.79 in her first time running in the event this season.
Beard also advanced to the finals with the fastest 800-meter time in the preliminaries, a school-record time of 2:10.25, breaking her own school record set a season ago in the preliminaries of the League Championships. Emily Roman set a new season-best with a time of 2:23.01, while Kayla McGurk closed the two-lap race in a time of 2:23.56, as the pair took 19th and 20th, respectively.
Tori Nida placed 12th in the 400-meter hurdles, running a time of 1:05.61, which is the eighth-fastest such time in program history, and her second-fastest of the season.
Cottrell also led a trio of Mastodons in the 200-meter dash, as two of the three had personal bests, and a third just a fraction of a second off of the school record. Cottrell placed 12th overall in a time of 25.29, just off of his time of 25.22 set two weeks ago. Kyley Marano placed 17th in the preliminaries with a time of 26.01, a new personal-best and the 7th fastest time in program history. Teammate Sara Crawford completed the half-lap in a time of 26.60, nearly a second better than her previous top time this season.
Elise Cobb placed 17th in the 400-meter dash, clearing the one-lap race in a time of 1:03.05, a collegiate best for the freshman. Marano also placed 11th in the high jump, clearing a season-high height of 4-11.5, 1.51 meters.
The Mastodons return to action in the third and final day of the championships on Friday afternoon.
