FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) A woman is accused of stealing a motorcycle while intoxicated and taking it for a short ride before needing help and flagging down police.
According to an affidavit for probable cause, Brenda J. Rutledge, 54, of Fort Wayne was at Ultimate Auto Deals around 3 p.m. on May 8, 2015. Rutledge asked a salesman to sit on the motorcycle and hear it run. The salesman was talking to his assistant when she took off down the road.
About ten minutes later, Rutledge said she “laid the bike down” and needed someone to help her get it upright. She then flagged down an officer to help her in the 900 block of McKinnie Avenue.
The officer helped Rutledge get the motorcycle upright and then noticed there was no license plate. That’s when she said she was test driving the motorcycle, yet she couldn’t recall the name of the dealership, which was actually Ultimate Auto Deal.
A test showed Rutledge had a blood alcohol content of 0.18 percent. Police checked her driving records and discovered she had numerous conviction of driving while suspended.
Rutledge faces the following charges:
- Auto theft
- Operating a vehicle with .15 or more alcohol content
- Operating a vehicle while intoxicate
- Operating a vehicle without a license or permit
