FORT WAYNE, Ind. — On an unseasonably cool Tuesday night at Parkview Field, the TinCaps were shut out for the first time this season in a 5-0 loss to the Lake County Captains.
Lake County (17-15) took a 2-0 lead in the third inning, added a third run in the fourth, and tacked on two more in the sixth, including a solo home run from left fielder Dorssys Paulino.
A key difference in the game was how each team performed with runners in scoring position. While Lake County went 5-for-10 in those situations, Fort Wayne (10-19) was 0-for-7 and left five men on base.
The TinCaps had trouble figuring out left-hander Sean Brady (W, 3-2), who worked six scoreless frames with seven strikeouts. Meanwhile, Ernesto Montas (L, 2-2) allowed five runs in six innings.
On the bright side for the TinCaps, right fielder Franmil Reyes tripled and doubled and left fielder Nick Torres extended his hitting streak to 12 games. Also, left-handed reliever Kyle McGrath threw three scoreless innings of relief with five strikeouts.
The game took just 2 hours, 23 minutes — the quickest of the season for the TinCaps — with the temperature in the low 50s.
Game three of four in this series is set for 11:05 a.m. Wednesday. Fort Wayne will start righty Chris Huffman, making his 2015 season debut, against lefty Anderson Polanco (2-3, 3.10). The game can be seen on Comcast Network 81, and heard on ESPN Radio 1380, TinCaps.com, and the TuneIn Radio app.
