Banks announces congressional bid

State Senator Jim Banks announces his candidacy for the 3rd District Congressional seat on Tuesday, May 12, at GOP Headquarters in downtown Fort Wayne.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) State Senator Jim Banks announced his bid to replace Marlin Stutzman as Indiana’s 3rd district congressman before a crowd of supporters at GOP headquarters in downtown Fort Wayne Tuesday afternoon. Two other Republicans are vying for the seat following Stutzman’s announcement over the weekend that he will try to capture the U.S. Senate seat of Dan Coats, who is retiring.

Banks returned three weeks ago from a tour of duty in Afghanistan where he served for eight months in his capacity as a U.S. Naval Reserve Officer.

“As I think about what makes America great and those in our nation’s capital who have worked to diminish America’s greatness at home and abroad, I realize there is more I must do to serve our country – the greatest country in the world,” said Banks, “This is the next step of that public service. I feel passionately that Washington, D.C. and congress are fundamentally broken, fundamentally flawed in the type of leadership we have there. That’s why I want to go be a part of the solution.”

If elected, Senator Banks wants to focus on two important local issues: eliminating the medical device tax to help preserve jobs and protecting and growing the 122nd fighter wing.

Liz Brown, also a state senator, has launched a “Liz Brown for Congress” website with the promise of more details to be released on May 27. Brown previously served as a member of Fort Wayne City Council.

Dr. Pam Galloway of Warsaw also plans to seek the seat. She’s a retired general surgeon, focusing on breast cancer over the last three years of her career and former Wisconsin state senator. She moved to Indiana with her husband to be closer to family and chaired the successful campaign of Republican state Representative Curt Nisly of Goshen in 2014.

“My husband and I have a deep respect for our hardworking neighbors,” says Galloway. “I’m committed to fighting for the issues that affect our region. Right now, I want to listen. Tell me what’s weighing on your mind and I’ll give your values a voice in Washington.”
