FORT WAYNE, Ind. – IPFW head men’s basketball coach Jon Coffman has announced the signing of Junior College star DeAngelo Stewart to a National Letter of Intent to compete for the Mastodons starting in the 2015-16 season.
“We are excited to have DeAngelo join our program this spring signing period,” said IPFW head coach Jon Coffman. “DeAngelo is an experienced, versatile, and athletic scoring wing that can defend multiple positions. Coach Jase Herl has done a tremendous job of taking DeAngelo’s game to the next level.”
Stewart helped lead North West Tech (Kansas) to a 20-11 record last season, including a 14-0 record at home. He is one of four players on his squad who will be continuing their careers at the NCAA Division I level.
The 6-6 Detroit native led his team in scoring (16.2 points per game) and rebounding (6.7 rebounds per game) from his guard position. Hit hit 46 percent of his shots from the field, including 38.5 percent from beyond the arc, and was an 83 percent shooter from the charity stripe.
He played in 30 games during the season, scoring in double-figures 26 times. He scored a season-high 30 points in February against Lamar C.C. where he hit 12-of-17 shots from the field, while averaging over 23 points per game during the team’s final four games heading into the postseason tournament.
“DeAngelo brings Division I experience to our roster in addition to having produced at a high level at Northwest Tech,” said Coffman. “He is a proven winner that helped Alabama State earn a CIT berth and win 19 games as a freshman, and lead Northwest Tech to a 20-11 record as their leading scorer as a sophomore.”
Stewart opened his career at Alabama State in 2013-14 where he battled injuries while helping his team to the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament.
He played his prep basketball at Detroit Cass Tech, where he averaged 13 points, eight rebounds, and two blocked shots per game. He was named his teams’ MVP and Defensive Player of the Year.
Stewart joins Kason Harrell and Charles Ruise Jr. as new members of the Mastodon team for the 2015-16 season.
