Lansing Completes Sweep Of TinCaps With 6-4 Win

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The TinCaps had the winning run at the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning Tuesday afternoon at Parkview Field, but came up short in a 6-4 loss to the Lansing Lugnuts.
With two outs and Franmil Reyes at third base and Edwin Moreno at second, Lansing’s Phil Kish got Duanel Jones to ground out to second base to end a late TinCaps surge. Moreno had just hit a two-run single to bring Fort Wayne (0-3) within a pair after once trailing 6-0.
Earlier, Moreno, who started in left field, collected an RBI on a fielder’s choice groundout in the sixth to put the TinCaps on the board for the first time. In the seventh, center fielder Michael Gettys ripped an RBI-double.
But that wasn’t enough for Fort Wayne, which fell behind 2-0 in the second inning thanks to a two-run double by Lansing’s Michael De La Cruz. The Lugnuts increased their lead to 5-0 in the fourth with RBIs from Josh Almonte, Dickie Joe Thon, and Rowdy Tellez. Lansing (5-1) tacked on an additional run in the fifth when Chris Carlson doubled home Ryan McBroom.
Right-hander Justin Shafer (1-0) worked 4 2/3 innings of relief to earn the win following three scoreless from righty Sean Reid-Foley. The save was the second of the year for the righty Kish. Another righty reliever, Mark Biggs, received credit for a hold with a scoreless inning.
On the mound for the TinCaps, Thomas Dorminy tossed five innings, allowing six runs. The lefty matched a career high with five strikeouts. Righties Yimmi Brasoban and Wilson Santos teamed for four scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
Lansing was 5-for-13 with runners in scoring position in the game. Fort Wayne went 1-for-11 in that department, stranding 11 runners on base.
The TinCaps stay home to start a new series on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. against the South Bend Cubs. South Bend is set to start righty Jake Stinnett (0-0, 1.80) against Fort Wayne righty Ernesto Montas, who will be making his season debut. The game can be seen on Comcast Network 81 and heard on ESPN Radio 1380, TinCaps.com, and the TuneIn Radio app.
